This essay will attempt to illustrate the role of science-fiction serial Doctor Who in British culture, comparing the classic series (aired from 1963 to 1989) with the new one (airing from 2005) by analysing the â€Å"birth† of Doctor Who in 20th century and its â€Å"regeneration† in 21st. Far from being just a filler in Saturday evening show schedule, Doctor Who became a cult not only in Britain but in the whole world, emerging as a model for all the sci-fi series to come. Throughout the years, the â€Å"Whoniverse† expanded, and beside the canonical tv series, numerous spin-offs, comics, novels, radio programs and adaptations for the stage started to show up. To bring some order in this whole â€Å"wibbly wobbly timey wimey† scenario, many Doctor Who fans†¦show more content†¦The serial should have filled the gap in the Saturday evening show schedule between the sport program â€Å"Grandstand† and the musical panel show â€Å"Juke Box J ury†, and it should have lasted at least 52 weeks. The television writer Cecil Edwin Webber proposed a show, called â€Å"The Troubleshooters†, based on three main characters’ adventures: â€Å"an handsome young man hero†, who should have commanded the interest of young boy and girls, â€Å"a goodloking welldressed heroine aged about 30†, to command the interest of older women, and â€Å"a mature man, 35-40, with some character twist†, to catch post-Granstand audience. Sydney Newman noted some details to fix, and another proposal from C.E. Webber, â€Å"Dr. Who†, came shortly after. â€Å" ‘Dr. Who’ General Notes on Background and Approach †, stored in BBC Archive, can be seen as the â€Å"birth certificate† of the 50-years-old drama. The introductory part states the show’s main features: Doctor Who would be a series of stories linked to form a continuing serial; each story would be six or seven episodes long, each one with its own title along with the story title; every episode would last 25 minutes and would begin with the closing sequence of the preceding one.
