The Role of Science Fiction Serial Doctor Who in British...
This essay will attempt to illustrate the role of science-fiction serial Doctor Who in British culture, comparing the classic series (aired from 1963 to 1989) with the new one (airing from 2005) by analysing the ââ¬Å"birthâ⬠of Doctor Who in 20th century and its ââ¬Å"regenerationâ⬠in 21st. Far from being just a filler in Saturday evening show schedule, Doctor Who became a cult not only in Britain but in the whole world, emerging as a model for all the sci-fi series to come. Throughout the years, the ââ¬Å"Whoniverseâ⬠expanded, and beside the canonical tv series, numerous spin-offs, comics, novels, radio programs and adaptations for the stage started to show up. The television writer Cecil Edwin Webber proposed a show, called ââ¬Å"The Troubleshootersâ⬠, based on three main charactersââ¬â¢ adventures: ââ¬Å"an handsome young man heroâ⬠, who should have commanded the interest of young boy and girls, ââ¬Å"a goodloking welldressed heroine aged about 30â⬠, to command the interest of older women, and ââ¬Å"a mature man, 35-40, with some character twistâ⬠, to catch post-Granstand audience. Sydney Newman noted some details to fix, and another proposal from C.E. Webber, ââ¬Å"Dr. Whoâ⬠, came shortly after. ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËDr. Whoââ¬â¢ General Notes on Background and Approach â⬠, stored in BBC Archive, can be seen as the ââ¬Å"birth certificateâ⬠of the 50-years-old drama. The introductory part states the showââ¬â¢s main features: Doctor Who would be a series of stories linked to form a continuing serial; each story would be six or seven episodes long, each one with its own title along with the story title; every episode would last 25 minutes and would begin with the closing sequence of the preceding one. Then, it presents several new characters: the ââ¬Å"with-it girlâ⬠Bridget, aged 15, the timid schoolmistress Miss McGovern, aged 24, the ââ¬Å"physically perfect, strong and corageousâ⬠Show MoreRelatedVictorian Novel9605 Words à |à 39 Pagesframe the period of Victorian literature, it is commonly accepted that it was the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) that saw the novel emerge and flourish, all the more that the 1937 was the year when Dickensââ¬â ¢ Oliver Twist, the first major work of fiction.
